School holidays in Germany are set by the Federal States, also called Länder, themselves. As there are 16 States there are 16 school calendars available as a summary table behind the links on this page.

The school holidays in the German Federal Republic are oriented according to the public holidays and the seasonal rest necessary for the pupils. Therefore the holidays are distributed as follows:

  • Easter holidays (Osterferien)
  • Pentecost holidays (Pfingstferien)
  • Summer holidays (Sommerferien)
  • Autumn holidays (Herbstferien)
  • Christmas holidays (Weihnachtsferien)
